Cause of the Fruitville Road Accident

It is not known if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk when the collision occurred, or how fast the vehicle was traveling. Based on the limited information provided in news reports, it is impossible to know who was responsible for this accident. Sarasota Police are investigating.

Unfortunately, we have seen a high number of catastrophic and fatal pedestrian accidents in Florida recently.  Just last month, on February 17th, a 43-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a car on Fruitville Road (Florida State Road 780), west of Avant Street.

Fruitville Road is a Known Dangerous Roadway in Sarasota

Sarasota continues to be a dangerous city for pedestrians. The Sarasota Police Department is currently (through May 2021) implementing a High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) program to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety throughout the city of Sarasota. According to a February 10, 2021 press release, Fruitville Road was one of the key roadways selected based on crash data involving pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles.

Other Sarasota roads of focus in the HVE program include North Tamiami Trail, South Tamiami Trail, and US 301 / North Washington Boulevard. The City of Sarasota ranks in the top 25 cities in Florida for traffic collisions resulting in serious injuries and fatalities to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Liability for Florida Pedestrian Accidents

If the driver of a vehicle is determined to be responsible for an accident, the victim may seek compensation in a personal injury claim. Damages may include medical care expenses, lost earnings, loss of earning capacity, as well as compensation for physical pain and emotional suffering. Although it is possible to recover compensation directly with the insurance company without an attorney, injury victims may be able to recover significantly higher compensation when they are represented by a skilled and capable Florida personal injury lawyer. Victims and their families are well-advised to speak with a lawyer as soon as possible following an accident.
